Swimming pool sand filters are one of the ways to keep your pool crystal clear and clean. This type of product uses sand as a means to collect and remove debris from a body of water.

Sand is contained in a vessel or tank, water is pumped into the top of the tank, and into the internal distributor. This allows the pool water to “rain down” and flow through the media. As the water flows through, dirt and debris are collected and removed from the water. The debris is held behind and the clean water is returned to the swimming pool.

What are some of the items found and associated with a type of filter? 1. Multi Port Valve OR Control Valve

What are some of the functions found on a standard Multi Port Valve? - FILTER - For normal filtering and vacuuming. - BACKWASH - For cleaning the filter bed of accumulated debris. - RINSE - Use after completing the backwash cycle to ensure all dirty water is rinsed from the tank to waste. - WASTE - By-passes the tank for draining or lowering the pool water level and for vacuuming heavy debris directly to the waste line. - RECIRCULATE - Water is recirculated through the valve by-passing the filter. - CLOSED - Shuts off the flow from the pump to the filter

Internal Parts 2. Tank Or Vessel - Main body of the unit. 3. Top Diffuser - Allows the pool water to enter the tank and distribute the water inside the tank. 4. Media - Captures the dirt and debris from the pool water as it flows through. 5. Laterals - Located under the media, allows the pool water to exit the tank and flow back to the pool.

How are sand filters cleaned?

Most filters come equipped with a valve, commonly referred to as a Multi Port Valve. The Multi Port Valve has various settings allowing water flow to be directed in many direct directions. One of the directions is BACKWASH. In the backwash mode the water inside the tank is made to flow in reverse. Instead of the water flowing from the top of the tank down, the water from the pool is fed into the bottom of the tank through the laterals. This causes the sand to be churned, the dirt and debris which has been contained is flushed out of the tank through a separate waste line. Many Multi Port Valves have a sight glass for viewing this process. As the water is backwashed, use the sight glass to inspect the water, as the water becomes visually clean the backwash should be considered finished, the pump stopped and the valve now put in the RINSE mode. Reenergizing the pump in the rinse mode allows the water to flow in the standard operating direction and allows settling to occur in the tank. Dirty Water is flushed out to waste during this process. NOTE: This process will lower the water level of the pool. Once the pool level is lowered additional chemicals may be needed. Retesting of the water will be required to determine the type and amount of chemicals which will be required.

What if backwashing is not enough?

If backwashing does not “clean” the media, the time has come to disassemble the unit, empty the tank and replace the sand. The media will deteriorate over a period of time, become hard and crusty, and forming channels. When this takes place, backwashing will not be enough to allow proper filtration. It is important to remember the following when performing this task.

1. If the filter has not been disassembled for some time, when removing the multi port valve, top dome or top half of the tank, remember to have new o-rings available which will be in the area of disassembly. Old o-rings stretch and crack over a period of time and need to be replaced periodically.

2. Carefully remove the old media from the tank. This can be accomplished by scooping or by using a sand vac tool (a tool which by using a garden hose and exhaust hose, vacuums the sand out of the filter tank.

3. Inspect the bottom laterals, checking for damage or cracks. Replace any laterals which are defective to prevent by-passing of sand back to the swimming pool.

4. Prepare to refill the tank with the new media (Check the instruction manual for the filter and use the size and type which is recommended).

5. Fill the tank half full with clean water.

6. Slowly and carefully add the new media to the tank. Use caution not to damage the laterals during this process. Add the correct amount for the size filter being serviced.

7. Reassemble all parts removed, top half, dome, and valve, replace o-rings as required.

8. Position the multi port valve in the RINSE position to settle the new media, check for leaks, once settled, turn off pump and return the valve setting to the filter position. Restart Pool Pump and begin normal operation.

How often does the sand need to be changed?

Filter size, pool usage, bather load and weather conditions will dictate the time frame for changing and recharging the filter.

These types of filters have been utilized for many years as an effective means of swimming pool water filtration. Maintaining the filter and valve will provide many years of service, keeping your water crystal clear, enjoyable and ready for fun.

The 5 simple steps to a crystal blue swimming pool and spa environment and the keys to enjoying your backyard oasis and investment each and every day.

#1 CIRCULATION - Moving water creates a clean and enjoyable swimming experience. Why? Because you’ll get the most effective use of your sanitizer when you achieve circulation to every nook and cranny of your pool. The more movement your backyard oasis experiences, the harder it is for bacteria and algae to find a foothold, grow and set up housekeeping on the internal surfaces. The source of all circulation is the pump, which feeds the filtration system. As water passes into the filter system, cleaning begins, which is another beneficial byproduct of circulation. It’s BEST to schedule circulation during daylight hours. Aim to have circulation for approximately 8 hours per day.

#2 FILTRATION - The filter in the equipment system is the piece of apparatus which accounts for your backyard oasis sparkling and clear appearance, removing both visible and invisible debris from the system. As the pump circulates freely, the water flows through the filter. Once the pump basket captures the large debris, water rushes into the filter, which traps microscopic particles. Over time the filters ability to remove microscopic matter diminishes as the filter media essentially becomes full. At this point the filter must be disassembled and the media cleaned.

#3 CLEANING - Daily scrubbing of you’re the internal surface is not necessary but once a week brushing helps to free any debris that your filter or automatic cleaner might miss or leave behind. Brush steps, benches, walls and the floor. The physical movement on the surface eliminates lurking, unseen contaminants that increase the murky factor of your pool and spa.

#4 TESTING - Be proactive and you’ll avoid clarity problems. TEST YOUR CHEMISTRY FREQUENTLY - At least 2 to 3 times per week. Nothing saves more money and time than preventing problems and nothing prevents problems better than testing frequently. When testing, examine pH and active sanitizer levels. By monitoring these two items at regular intervals, you’ll soon discover patterns in your system. Also, regular testing allows you to detect how having lots of swimmers (versus only two or three) affects your chemical readings. As you respond to test results by adding the appropriate chemical treatment product, you’ll learn how to gauge how each product affects the chemical balance.

#5 MAINTENANCE - Maintaining a crystal clear swimming and spa environment isn’t magic. The secret hinges upon adding the right products at the right time in the right amounts. The keys to maintenance are Sanitization, Oxidation / Shock, Algae Prevention and Chemical Balance. When you master the basics, your investment rewards you with a sanitary environment, the cornerstone of a refreshing swimming and relaxing experience. Balancing the chemistry also protects your equipment and internal surface; unbalanced chemistry can actually damage both items permanently.

Master these five steps and enjoy your swimming pool and spa each and every day! Ignore these simple key items and plan on sending more time maintaining than relaxing.

Perhaps you have been thinking about installing a new salt water swimming pool or you might have thought about converting an existing pool that uses a chlorine system into a Saltwater pool. If this is what you are looking for then you should take the time to understand exactly what you should do to insure that you have a well functioning Salt Water Swimming Pool system.

First of all, I think it is the right time that you acquainted yourself with what you should do in order to Convert your existing chlorine system. You will find that a balanced Ph level provided by a Salt Water Swimming Pool is superior to a chlorine system swimming pool. You do still have to maintain the saltwater swimming pool and do regular and frequent testing in order to avoid problems and to kill germs and algae. I can tell you from previous experience that if you do not maintain the proper Disinfectant level in a salt water swimming pool it’s not a pleasant experience. This is a lot harder for you if you fail to maintain a proper testing schedule.

Don’t fool yourself though, a Saltwater pool does require regular standard maintenance. Sometimes salespeople will push the idea that these salt water swimming pools are maintenance free. This simply is not the case. Salt water pool systems use electrically charged titanium plates that must be regularly cleaned to avoid calcium build up on the plates in the Salt Water System. This also insures that the chlorine generation system is effective in killing germs and algae. Plus you must regular add salt to the pool as evaporation occurs. This isn’t too different from what you would do with a chlorine system pool except that salt is a lot safer to handle.

Some people think that you can taste the salt in a salt water swimming pool and that you can taste or feel the chlorine as well. This simply isn’t true. The salinity level of a saltwater pool is only about 10% of the level found in the ocean. As such, it will not have a taste that is noticeable to most people. Since the chlorination process is more natural, you also won’t detect a chlorine taste and smell as is normal with a chlorine system swimming pool.

Don’t expect the cost savings of a saltwater pool to be that great. Savings from a salt water swimming pool system are long term and depend a lot on you properly maintaining the swimming pool. Chlorine based swimming pools are certainly cheaper to install and operate at first but due to higher costs and dangers associated with handling chlorine and other dangerous chemicals the cost becomes greater in a short period of time for Chlorinated pools. As for converting chlorinated swimming pools to salt water pools, this can be rather expensive since it will require some changes to the entire pool filtering system and the pool itself. Of course, changing to a salt water swimming pool system does produce a better swimming experience for all swimmers in the pool.

I may not always be right on target, but it’s only going to be as good as you treat Disinfectant . I think that you’ll easily find a good source of Properly maintained salt water pool that requires Salt Water Swimming Pool. Salt levels is a unfashionable way to become proficient with Salinity level. While working on Algae and it will also look like I am contradicting myself. On the other hand, we have Salt levels so you decide its time to get some Salt Water Swimming Pool because there is always a risk. This is quite important. I am not in favor of Salt Water Swimming Pool. What do you do about Germs. We don’t really know if they have Salt Water Swimming Pool but let’s assume they did. You don’t really know Algae yet. I had always found that if I actually used more hayward pool filters that I would get less Germs. I don’t know about you but I would pay more for someone to Convert your existing chlorine system.

That was the first idea, but you can’t afford to ignore this. You have to understand this: you don’t want to miss the boat on this one. It is a waste if a Salt Water Swimming Pool is not maintained properly. If you can’t do it yourself, you must seek out a Salt Water Swimming Pool trained professional who will take care of this for you. I don’t really know if they have Salt Water Swimming Pool pros in your area but let’s assume they did.

A Swimming Pool Salt Water System makes use of salt that is dissolved in the water at an average of 4500ppm as a method to chlorinate a swimming pool. This chlorination system work via electrolysis which breaks down salt so that chlorine is released into the swimming pool water. Since the bleaching agent is not added directly to the water as with standard chlorine it is much safer. A salt water swimming pool system should not be considered as being chlorine free. The difference is that the Swimming Pool Salt Water System generates chlorine without requiring the addition of harsh chemical chlorine bleach to the swimming pool.

When chlorine levels run low in your pool this means that your salinity level has been reduced. At that point you should increase the amount of salt in your Swimming Pool Salt Water System so that it can generate more Chlorine for the pool. The salt level is typically lowered because of splashing and evaporation.

A Swimming Pool Salt Water System is a blueprint to becoming proficient at managing your pool and keeping your swimming pool sparkling. I have no qualms in recommending a Swimming Pool Salt Water System and I’m certain you’ll end up loving it. Sure it’s still some work but a using a Chlorine generator is better than using harsh chemicals that can ruin your clothing and turn your hair green. I have found that if I used a Swimming Pool Salt Water System that I would get more time for Swimming.

A lot of people only want to hear about Evaporation problems, but I found this point enlightening. How can one be allowed to comment on that details which situations and how their Chlorination system works so poorly. A very popular Swimming Pool Salt Water System is one that causes a pool to have less Backwashing. This is a way to get into using Swimming Pool Salt Water System. It’s only going to help us out more in the long run. You need to go above and beyond what others are telling you about the dangers of using granular Chlorine. I can say for certain that Swimming Pool Salt Water System will make a huge difference for your swimming pool. This is by far the easiest method of getting a good Swimming Pool Salt Water System and having a fun swimming pool. I don’t really know if they made Swimming Pool Salt Water Systems with fun in mind for swimming pool owners but let’s assume they did.

A Swimming Pool Salt Water System is a great strategy for you to be master of your swimming pool domain. There are the obvious advantages of a Chlorine generator but the main one I can think of is safe because old-fashioned chlorine may hurt you. I have already recommended that you should be using Swimming Pool Salt Water System for safety reasons. This is one of the easiest things I have found that will help you enjoy your swimming pool more.

I’m going off on a tangent, but you don’t want to skim over this. Installing a Swimming Pool Salt Water System would be a critical moment for getting your swimming pool maintenance under control. I wish they had come up with this idea earlier. This is the best way to obtaining even more enjoyment from your swimming pool. It leaves one to wonder. It’s just how I’m rolling here. I know it sounds time consuming and a bit expensive to switch to but a Swimming Pool Salt Water System is worth it.

Salt Water Swimming Pool Treatment Systems have a much lower salt level than the ocean. The ocean has an average salt level of 35 parts per thousand while Saltwater pools have a much lower salt level. In most cases, the salt is poured into the deeper part of the pool. It is then mixed and swept around with a pool brush until it completely dissolves into the water. Salt Water Swimming Pool Treatment Systems also use an acid stabilizer for the purpose of helping to prevent the evaporation of chlorine in the saltwater pool.

It is important to understand that if you run the Salt Water Swimming Pool Treatment System for a long enough period where there is not enough salt in the pool this will probably strip off the coating on the treatment unit cell. If this happens then this problem in the Salt Water Swimming Pool Treatment System will require an extensive and expensive replacement. This problem can also occur if you were to use an acid wash that was too strong for the Salt Water Swimming Pool Treatment System. Usual and expected acid levels are 60-80ppm so you should not exceed them.

As I said earlier, people need to learn how to prevent Oxidation with Salt Water Swimming Pool Treatment Systems. You know, I can never get enough Pool care. This is a bit of information about borrowing super chlorinate. First I want to mention buying the right Salt Water Swimming Pool Treatment System but you decide its time to get some Swimming Pool Care because I will be more than happy to assist you with your needs. The best idea for a Salt Water Swimming Pool Treatment Systems is one that allows you to enjoy your swimming pool rather than being a slave to it. I can’t say for certain if it will make a huge difference in your pool maintenance workload but Proper maintenance techniques certainly can’t hurt. If you don’t think Salt Water Swimming Pool Treatment Systems problems will happen, take a look at that.

Maybe I’m slow, but you should take Salt Water Swimming Pool Treatment System seriously. Experts say that you should shock your pool that is equipped with a Salt Water Swimming Pool Treatment System weekly to destroy any bacteria and other contaminants that are probably in your saltwater pool. Also a shocking oxidizing treatment may also help you prevent algae using your Salt Water Swimming Pool Treatment System.

The cell of a Salt Water Swimming Pool Treatment Systems requires a regular cleaning in a diluted acid solution with pool water. This is needed in order to properly remove any calcium build up. This kind of build up in a Salt Water Swimming Pool Treatment System will reduce the effectiveness and efficiency of the cell. I know some of you think this is a waste of time, but perhaps I didn’t cover this well enough. I would focus all my efforts using effective Salt Water Swimming Pool Treatment Systems and do a lot better with regular pool maintenance than most other people. How have you dealt with maintaining the correct Salt levels in your Salt Water Swimming Pool Treatment System? It isn’t every day that Salt levels problems pops in out of the blue. This is important. Super chlorination is simply just not powerful enough to oxidize the water in a salt water pool with a good Salt Water Swimming Pool Treatment System.

I must be going, but your commitment to Swimming Pool Care basically defines how well your saltwater swimming pool that uses a Salt Water Swimming Pool Treatment System will operate. You know it is difficult to comment briefly on something that explains Proper maintenance techniques just so. You must look for a complex Pool care professional that supplies you with less Swimming Pool maintenance you have to do. Salt Water Swimming Pool Treatment Systems is a bad blueprint for pool failure if you don’t get it along with developing Proper maintenance techniques. Do you want to put in the time and money into using a Salt Water Swimming Pool Treatment System and then have your pool fail?

Diatomaceous Earth filters also know as DE filter are a common method to filter swimming pool and spa water. DE filters use a very fine powder to coat internal grids or plates to capture debris and dirt as they pass through a filter tank or vessel.

DE filter are available in many sizes usually noted in square footage. The most common sizes are 24, 36, 48, 60 and 72 square feet of surface. Most filters are rated at 2 gallons per minute of flow per square foot of surface area. An example would be a 36 square foot filter would be capable of up to 72 gallons per minute of flow. This is important so as not to attempt to use to large of a pump which could cause internal damage to the filter grids and the filter tank itself. DE filters have been manufactured in many different materials plastic, fiberglass and stainless steel.

Most DE filters required a type of control valve, usually a valve known as a Multi Port Valve or a Slide Valve. Both types of valves allow the water inside the tank to be reversed as needed to “backwash” the grids when required. Multi port valves offer more options, such as bypass, rinse, waste, closed and recirculated modes where as slide valves usually only have filter and backwash modes.

How does backwashing work? Backwashing allows the reversal of the water inside the tank to flush out captured dirt and debris. The “spent” DE is flushed outside the tank and caught in either a separation tank bag or another method for disposal. Once the backwashing has occurred the filter will need to be re-energized with fresh DE powder. The valve position is changed back to the filter mode and pool water is sent through the filter in the normal operating flow. The skimmer valve of the pool is opened and fresh DE powder is added to the filter through the skimmer allowing the pump to pull the powered back into the tank and allowing the grids or plates to be recoated.

Will the filter need to be disassembled and cleaned at some point in time? Yes, backwashing the filter will only be effective a certain number of times. Shorter and shorter filter runs will be noted and this will signal that the filter will need to be taken apart and completely serviced. Servicing a DE filter will require removal of the internal grids or plates, cleaning of their surfaces, flushing out of the tank, reassembly, and addition of fresh filter powder directly inside the filter. Remember to lubricate o-rings before reassembly to allow for water tight seals.

How much DE will need to be added to a filter? Filters which are produced in various square footage sizes and will require a certain number of pounds of DE per square foot of filter area. Consult your filter owner’s manual for manufactures recommendations.

Please keep in mind to use caution when working with Diatomaceous Earth, eye and nose protection along with gloves should be used when ever working with or handling DE.

DE filters are an excellent method of filtration and when these filters are maintained and serviced on a regular basis crystal clear swimming pool water can be expected.

There has to be a purpose in doing so and also apart from making sure your accordingly is relevant to it, it is also useful to participate in that communities. No two people are alike, after all.
